~~ A journey through the Straits of Malacca ~~

The Straits of Malacca (SoM) is the Malaysian restaurant in downtown Mason where “foodies” with a taste for adventure and fine dining experiences can claim as one of the most unique in Eastern-Western fusion cuisine, namely Southeast Asian reflecting Western colonial influences from the early 18th century.

SoM is located in the old municipal building of Mason on Main Street and has three dining areas:
1. Tioman Cafe — offers authentic Malaysian “Street Food” – Exotic dishes and fruit drinks for the young-at-heart and who are seeking to try something adventurous and excitingly fresh!
2. Blue Intan — Jazz & Tapas Bar – A destination for adults seeking relaxation and premium drinks accompanied by a selection of distinctive tapas with tastes reminiscent of both East and West
3. Langkawi Spice — Gourmet dining experience for enthusiasts who have diverse international eating interests and experiences, and who are willing to pay more for unique tastes and adventurous palates

All three outlets will feature dishes and original recipes from Executive Chef Paul Liew. Guests will have the opportunity to experience the original tastes and textures that have come from a long history of colonial Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Arab, Chinese, Indian, and British influence in port towns along the west coast of the Malay Peninsula.

Named after the ocean waterway that links the UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) historical cities of Melaka and Penang, the Straits of Melaka (as it used to be known) is identified as an “International Pivotal Waterway Passage with a Long Lingering History of Coastal Ports and Towns” – strategically located on the most important water way in the world that links the East and West.

The Straits of Malacca LLC (SoM) is founded in 2010 by siblings Mary Jacque, Susan Giovengo, Alvin Liew and Paul Liew, a Malaysian family who migrated to the USA beginning in 1980.
